Disruption at Auckland Festival of Photography – 2022

Outdoor, online and in venue exhibitions that explore the theme of disruption are at the heart of this year’s Auckland Festival of Photography, which runs 2-12 June.

AFP remains agile in delivering a festival in the current environment, with content that reflects social and global dynamics, says AFP founder Julia Durkin, MNZM. “Disruption highlights the role photographers and artists play in articulating what impacts our daily life. Stresses include threats to environmental systems, socio economic shifts, the troubling crossover of the climate crisis with Covid, and the impacts of food, refugee and energy crises. Photographers present these realities and help us navigate a way through them.”

"I am really proud to lead a team that has delivered three outstanding festivals during a pandemic. In 2020, 2021 and now 2022, we've innovated our way through and satisfied a growing audience for photography"

Presented in association with Auckland Festival of Photography 2022. While New Zealanders stayed home, queued and remained in limbo, New Zealand Media & Entertainment (NZME) visual journalists were tasked with documenting daily life and weather, lockdown news and changes brought to the status quo during one of the most challenging periods in recent history. The NZME journalists juggled work life balance and faced the same family life challenges to bring ‘fourth wall’ visuals as standalone vistas, provide complimentary colour, and document the news stories of NZME for newsdesks.
