We're delighted to bring you the 19th edition of our free Festival from tomorrow, Thursday 2 June, celebrating photography, connecting communities and enjoying visual arts. A good way to start Queen's Birthday weekend in Tāmaki Makaurau for the official Festival 2022 season.

WATERFRONT CBD

Auckland Festival of Photography presents Vital Impacts as part of our exclusive international exhibitions for the Disruption [raruraru] theme.

We are pleased to bring to Auckland, for an exclusive season at Karanga Plaza, a nature and human habitat series as a highlight of the climate change projects on the city waterfront. Vital Impacts is a non-profit that supports organizations dedicated to protecting and preserving human and wildlife habitats.

SILO PARK

This exhibition is a small showcase of 100's of images taken by NZ Herald Visual Journalist's (full details here) during the last two years showing the ordinary and the familiar through the lenses of the extraordinary coverage of: a global pandemic, challenging weather events and the new realities, disruptions and upheavals that affected all New Zealanders

Screening daily, more images from the NZ Herald photography and video collections will be showing within the NZ Herald building foyer in Graham Street and outdoors on the Victoria St West billboard throughout the Auckland Festival of Photography.

CBD

Kaunas modernism architecture is currently in the process of being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This exhibition features photographs taken for this important application, which, at the same time, reflect the relationship between the contemporary photographer and his hometown. Presented by Lithuanian Society of New Zealand and Kaunas – European Capital of Culture 2022.

Polish Heritage Museum

It took an international collaboration to access these images, with help from Alain Rempher (the photographer who developed and authenticated the images) and his son Olivier Rempher who found the rolls of film in France, plus National Polish Archives Digital in Poland who now have scans of the images and the Polish Embassy in Wellington for coordination to help bring this exhibition together at the Polish Heritage Museum in Howick.

For this group exhibition, members of the Advertising & Illustrative Photographers Association (AIPA) share personal work inspired by the term 'Catalyst'.

WESTGATE

To showcase the rapid development and beautiful scenery in Hobsonville in Auckland, this exhibition shares twenty photographs, in which the artist has focused on light, shadow and composition.

MT ALBERT

Auckland photographer Steve Taylor rescues antique film cameras, restoring them to their former glory and functionality. He has refurbished close to 150 and film tested every one. A selection of Taylor's cameras; from the early 20th century to the 1970s; will be on display in the ballroom at historic Alberton, with examples of photographs taken with them, revealing the richness and detail of film images.

CITY - AOTEA

Mark Barber’s photographic portraits transform this hidden below ground invisibility and eloquently capture the humanity within the toughness of the construction site. This outdoor exhibition is sponsored by the Link Alliance, a group of seven organisations building the stations, tunnels and systems of the City Rail Link.

NEWMARKET

After two 'unprecedented' years of lockdowns, cancelled plans and global uncertainty, a collective of Auckland-based photographers with diverse photographic practices have responded to the outward chaos by shifting their focus closer to home.

KINGSLAND

Matt Henry’s Double Grammar Zone borrows a real estate marketing term that promotes residential properties within the prestigious zoning catchments of Auckland Grammar and Epsom Girls’ Grammar. In this exhibition, the phrase also refers to language, the real estate and art markets, and the visual grammar of abstraction and advertising. Curator Emil McAvoy.

Counting down to the 18th edition of Auckland Photo Day,  sponsored again this year by Fujifilm NZ on 11th June.  Great camera prizes are available for images the judges select as their 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize. Terms and Conditions apply.
