Auckland artist Emma Bass’s new series 'Florassemblage' presents a gravity-defying interpretation of her floral portraits. Further amplifying familiar vibrant colour combinations, this new series of work presents a rich, playful and joyous dance of photographed and painted colour and form.
These works deconstruct the still life genre, challenging viewers with a double take on perspective and point-of-view. They speak to this year’s theme by resisting categorisation: photograph or painting, while also resisting conventions governing the physics of material form and pictorial composition. Through destabilising viewer expectations, Bass alludes to her previous work in its efforts to defy perceptions of beauty, perfection and permanence.
