AInthropology is an experiment converging AI and Anthropology that serves as a historical record and a warning. The images from late 2023 mark the period that AI pictures moved from the imperfect into the seamless outputs we have today, AI was prompted to recreate anthropological portraits – ethnographic-style images of cultural "types" echoing historical documentation. AInthropology raises ethical questions about the perils of AI and the erosion of trust in visual history. Seductive portraits and unsettling anatomies reveal something about AI's fundamental disconnect from human embodiment. They highlight the ethical quagmire of AI trained on stolen data and its eugenics-like implications for perfecting or distorting humanity. Viewer caution advised.
