Yuki Kihara
Theme
Yuki Kihara (Aotearoa New Zealand’s representative at the 59th Biennale di Venezia 2022) is an interdisciplinary artist whose work disrupts and re-frames dominant and singular narratives. Her art practice examines gender roles, ecology, (mis)representation, cultural identities and the past, present and future societal issues from colonial and post-colonial perspectives. Kihara’s iconic photographic series, "Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?" and "A Study of a Samoan Savage", explore photography as a means to traverse time and condense multiple histories and stories; revealing many layers of narrative content, as well as art, political and social dialogues.
