Resisting: To Live
Roun Ry (Cambodia)
"Upon discovering the issues going on in the communities of Kbal Romeas and Srey Kor, I was immediately drawn to the story and wanted to develop a documentation project to learn more about how the communities have been affected by dam construction in Cambodia. Since the completion of the Lower Sesan 2 hydroelectric dam in northeast Cambodia in 2018, almost 5,000 villagers have been displaced from their homes. The dam construction forced a physical separation between the villagers, those who left and those who stayed behind. It also caused an emotional and political divide within the community. However, they continue to struggle financially, starting a new life with few resources, and suffer from the separation from their families and ancestral lands. This project is an exploration of their story, and how their life has been affected – it is a story of survival."

Between the Silent Eyes
Nhan Tran (Vietnam)
"Since late 2019, I have been documenting the stories of young mothers in the Hmong community in Ha Giang province, Vietnam. The Hmong are one of 53 indigenous minority groups in Vietnam and are also one of the most impoverished communities in the country, traditionally leading an agrarian lifestyle. Their strongly patriarchal, patrilineal culture often views women’s roles as shouldering the bulk of domestic labor and childcare, with little to no say in family decisions. This project explores the lives of these young women as they are forced to grow up before their time, navigating their roles as wives, mothers and daughters-in-law, even as they hold on to their dreams and hopes." Nhan Tran

Verzasca Nomads
Ronald Patrick (Chile)
Today, Switzerland might be more well-known for the money that traverses and flows within its borders, but the country’s also host to a much more ancient kind of movement. Hidden in plain sight throughout the grandiose mountains and valleys of the country, stone houses and ruins dot paths that nomads have walked on with their animals for centuries bearing witness to this country’s deep-rooted traditions of transhumance. In the Verzasca Valley, in the South of Switzerland, communities have kept these old customs alive, passing down the skills and knowledge necessary from generation-to-generation.
