The highly anticipated new 2024 edition of Sony Auckland Photo Day, over 24 hours in Auckland region opens this weekend. The day is about creating new work, new images, new ideas and new imagination for this 'day in the life' longest running annual public photo contest in the city. Everyone is welcome to take part.
Sony Auckland Photo Day 2024! Since 2004, our regional competition ‘Auckland Photo Day’ has been inviting anyone, anywhere in Auckland — during a 24-hour period — to capture and share their perspectives of our region.
This ‘crowd-sourced’ visual documentary of one day in the life of Tāmaki Makaurau democratises photography and creates conversations about the places we live, work and play in as well as the many, varied people who populate them.
This year’s iteration is this weekend on Saturday 8 June and includes two ‘Sony Photo Walks’ (full details here) as well as an assortment of prizes (Terms and Conditions apply) including:

Justine Varga - Two Rooms
Justine Varga’s cameraless photographs are made over long periods – sometimes years. Rather than documenting the details of the recognisable world, these images explore the chemistry, physics, history and phenomenology of photography itself. Opens Saturday 8th June.

Photobook Friday 2024
Auckland Festival of Photography presents Talking Culture - Photobook Friday. The festival is pleased to bring to Auckland, for the 7th annual Photobook Friday event - come along to see presentations from NZ artists/photographers, who have published or are in the planning/design phase for their photography books over the past 12 months, while viewing a selection of these books in person.
Presentations start at 12pm - each one is 20 mins + Q&A - speakers list here.
FREE, first come, first seated. Runs for 1 hour and 40 minutes, bring your coffee, lunch or energy bar too. Friday 7th June at 12pm.
Scenes from the scene - 605 Morningside Drinkery
One of several exhibitions opening in the inner suburbs is by Rukus Photo Group & Friends, at 605 Morningside, and from K Rd, The Hemp Store shows Hayley Thayer's latest series to Kingsland's Skar Lab with Kate Rampling on Thursday 6th June - go out on a impromptu photo circuit, and on Friday 7th June head back to K'Rd's Underground Bistro for the opening of Hannah Rose Arnold's new show Stem Creeps. Following on from the Kōwhai Research Residency last year, Hannah uses eco-friendly art practice to explore the shores of Te Rāwhiti in the Bay of Islands, now under threat from invasive, exotic caulerpa seaweed.

NZ Chinese Photography Assoc presents
NZCPA is honoured to share the work of Mr. Jiang Ting, a Chinese photographer who is currently based in Tokyo, presenting his series of works titled “New Zealand Chinese Photography Association"(NZCPA) - including black and white documentary photography of “grand sumo ceremony” and 30 of “sumo contest”. Starts on 8th June at 3pm, all welcome. 4 days only, ends 12th June.
